Spiros Sahinis – Howzitgaaaaaan Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate?
Nicholas and Theodoti Sahinis announced the birth of their first child weighing 7lb on Monday 27 September 1964 at 12.07am.
Spiro is the eldest of two children and is very close to his parents, his sister Helen, her husband Chris and nephews Senesios and Nicholas. He is a BIG kid when he is with his nephews, and when he plays with my nieces. And, then there is his good mate Christopoulos and their love of mangoes from Far North Queensland….
Spiro and Helen grew up in a shop environment and were part of a multi-cultural community, and this is where he developed this knack of doing Maltese accents. “Eeeya Joey” is one of Spiro’s favourite Maltese expressions which cracks me up when I hear it. I understand, Helen is even better and can pass for a dead ringer!!!
Spiro and Helen got into a few scrapes (as all good siblings do!) involving their bikes, including a few run-ins with netball poles (in Spiro’s case!). Not only does Spiro like to cycle, he has a pretty funky, souped up one with two handles (yes, two handles) – one for conventional cycling and the other for cruising mode to take in the scenery. He gets quite a few looks when he goes out!
After school he attended a Photography Studies College 1982 - 1985 (Melbourne Certificate of Illustrative Photography) and his passion is Black & White photography. He enjoys taking photos of landscape and nature settings. The photo on this site is one he took this year in my father’s village (Ramia). He also takes candid people shots and our trip to Greece this year is a pictorial study of my family on holidays.
Spiro left Melbourne 22 May 1994 to take up an opportunity in Hayman as one of the maintenance personnel, working for a former boss. His #1 job was to daily test and maintain 8 resort swimming pools and spas. A hard job, but someone had to do it!!!
The climatic change also assisted Spiro who has a ‘mild’ Asthma condition. After Hayman, Spiro moved to Cairns and continued to work for the hospitality industry.
He returned and settled in Brisbane in 2000 and this is now his home. He resides in Brighton and a ‘famous’ place called “Club Dunne”.
I met Spiro on the 8th of November 2003. The way we met is through a close family friend (Maria who is like my little sister). Spiro found himself at the Caboolture Flea Markets one day and was looking for his favourite soft drink – Lipton Ice Tea (lightly carbonated). He found this fairly ‘rare’ brew at Maria’s stall stand. She was wearing a Greek Dancing cap – a dead giveaway that she was of Greek descent! He bought the drink and proceeded to leave by saying “Yiassou”. A conversation and subsequent friendship between the two was formed.
Thanks to Maria and Lipton Ice Tea we met in November at the Golden Ox. Spiro is unexpectedly the love of my life. He is also one of my best friends who I can talk to about anything.
He bought me a bicycle for my 40th birthday. I had not ridden for 9 years and he took me for a 20km ride across the Hornibrook bridge, with a return trip into the head-wind. He was so optimistic, believing and encouraging of me especially when I was wobbly!
Spiro is embraced and loved by my family – my brother Mark, my sister-in-law Kristina, my nieces Georgia and Lexie, Laura (my other ‘mum’). I know that if my parents were living they (too) would have embraced him and loved him.
